Welcome to the Lahti 2009 WMA Championships!

On behalf of the city of Lahti, it is my pleasure to wish athletes and friends of athletics a warm welcome to the World Masters Athletics in Lahti. Our city is proud to host the biggest international event of the year 2009 in Finland.

The organisation of the event is already in good process. Lahti has hosted many, successful major sport events. These World Masters Athletics bring a record number of athletes to Lahti. Our city has prepared for approximately 10 000 tourists.

In addition to the sport competitions, Lahti region offers its visitors a wide range of culture and enjoyment of wonderful Finnish nature. The Lahti Symphony Orchestra is world-known for its Sibelius-interpretations. The unique milieu for these concerts is the Sibelius Hall, which is a demonstration of skill in modern wood architecture. A visit at harbour, which is the Summer Living Room for the people in Lahti, gives you an insight of the beauty of the surrounding Lake District. The best way to enjoy the marvellous Lake scenery is on the deck of a ship.

I wish you all success and genuine sport spirit to all the athletes. I’m convinced that you will enjoy your stay in our summery city, at the heart of the Finnish nature.
